Another Car Update

We had to make a few more changes to the cars list, so that Alex Guo can leave from the hotel in Newark on Friday morning and take some equipment such as tents and food in his car. Also, so that Nadine doesn't have to get to San Jose or anywhere and Elba can leave from San Francisco. Let us know if anything else needs to be changed!

Cars Update

A few changes to the cars list. Heidi is no longer coming, so Marco and Jenny have been moved to Ahmed's car. Leos is now bringing a car on Saturday morning, so Nadine and Nezha have been moved into his car. Let me know if anything needs to be changed!

Activities Update

Well, there was a flurry of activity on the activities front yesterday. We are going to be at Bass Lake from 2pm onwards on the Saturday and people are going to be doing various different activities.
The following people have booked jet-skis:

  • 3-5pm: Dinuk, Wee Steve, Jan and Kristy
  • 3-5pm: Dan, Helen, Jirka and Leos
  • 3-5pm: Marco, Jenny, Mark and Sandy
  • 3-4pm: Farid

We've mostly booked 3-seater jet-skis for $189 for 2 hours, plus about $40 gas, so each pair will have one hour. If you want to go, book it now as there are only a few left at the marina!! Call them up at 1-800-585-WAVE.

There are also quite a few people wanting to go kayaking. This is $19/hour and again, you should book this yourself with the marina. 1-800-585-WAVE.

There will probably also be a mountain biking trip on Friday. You can rent bikes from, yes, you guessed it 1-800-585-WAVE, but they have said it's probably not neccessary to book this and you should just be able to turn up. If you're sure you want to go though, best bet is to book it.

On Sunday in Yosemite some people may also book mountain bikes. These can be booked from Curry Village rental, $20 per day or $5.25 per hour. good idea with the weight of traffic around for memorial day weekend. (209) 372 8319.

Then of course there's all the free activities like just getting a bus around the park, hiking, photo-tours, etc.

Look at the activities page for more details and keep checking your e-mails and this web site for updates!

I've put up the cars list. Please check that you are on the list in the correct place and contact your driver (phone numbers were e-mailled out) to confirm when and where you are leaving from.

Welcome Reception

Thanks to everyone who came to the welcome reception! I hope you found it informative and fun and enjoyed learning how to defend yourself against a bear, lion, rattlesnake, me, Tim or Younnes!! I've no doubt pictures will be up soon.

If you didn't attend, we'll send you the welcome pack by e-mail tomorrow.

We sorted out the car list so we'll post that up tomorrow and send an e-mail to everyone with the car allocations and everyone's phone numbers. Some of us are going to go to the graduation dinner in San Jose on Thursday evening then we can come back to the hotel with those going up on Friday morning and they can stay overnight. Cars will be leaving on Friday at 8am and Saturday at 7am from Newark, as well as a couple on Friday afternoon/evening. Full details will be sent tomorrow.

We also briefly discussed activities. Basically the deal is you have to book these yourself using the phone numbers on the activities page. Wee Steve will send an e-mail about horse riding tomorrow.

Updates

Several updates to Directions, Activities, Kit List (what YOU need to bring!), Weather & Schedule.

Important: Cars and Tents!

We are still a few car and tent-spaces short!! If you have a car or a tent you can bring, please please please consider taking them and let us know as soon as possible. With 74 going, we currently have car space your 68. We'd really like to have more car spaces than people to make sure everything goes smoothly. We have reserved some rental cars just in case but these are expensive and will take a significant chunk out of the budget so we'd rather not use them. If you have said you are bringing a car, check the Cars Page to make sure you're on the list and your details are correct. Same for tents. Thanks! See you all next week.

Food details

Good afternoon folks.

For those of you who don't know me I am Big Steve. I am one of the Scottish guys working in the bay area. I am also one of the organisers of Get Golden.

As you should know, the event is next weekend. We thought it best to send out some info as to what to expect. My responsibility at the moment is to come up with some kind of reasonably edible food to eat while camping. I have created a list of sorts to let you all see what you can expect in terms of culinary delights.

Weather and Kit List Pages

I've added a Weather Page with forecasts for Bass Lake and Yosemite on Memorial Day weekend and links to the relevant Weather.com pages. I'll update the weather forecast daily from now on. At the moment the forecast is sunny and warm!

I've also added a Kit List page suggesting what you might want to bring with you. If you can think of anything we've missed out, please let us know.

Yosemite Floods

Well, just after I wrote that weather report on Monday I saw on the news that Yosemite valley was flooded!! Turns out the warm weather and snow I was raving about combined to cause the Merced river to rise about 5ft, causing camp sites to be evacuated and roads to be closed. The waters subsided on Tuesday and the park is now re-open again. I called up Bass Lake and the region where we are camping (which is about an hour from Yosemite) was not affected. Whew!

Registration is closed

Thank you everyone who has signed up. The list of people coming is now finalized and we are not accepting any more registrations. Have a look at the People page to check you're on the list and see all the fantastic people you're going to be spending this event with. Now we just need your tents, your cars and your love! 10 days to go!!!!!!!!!

Be Bear Aware!

We are going to have to be very careful about food and rubbish while camping. Bears and other wildlife are a big problem in the area so we will have to make sure not to leave any trash around the camp site and ensure that all food (in fact, all scented items including sun block, tooth paste, etc.) is secured safely inside trunks of cars and/or the bear lockers at the camp site. This is everyone's responsibility.

Yosemite Weather Report

I was up at Yosemite this weekend checking things out in preperation for Get Golden.

The weather is looking good up there. It was approaching 80°F in Yosemite Valley, although it did get quite chilly at night, perhaps down to about mid-40s. Decent sleeping bags and/or blankets will definitely be needed!!

Bring your own sleeping bag and as many blankets as you can carry! Be prepared and suitably clothed for both warm and cool weather. Sun screen is probably a good idea! And insect-repellent. We'll be posting up a kit list of everything you should bring this week.

There is still snow above 6000ft (we are camping at 3400ft) and some of the roads are closed just now - most notably Tioga Pass Road which leads to the high country in Yosemite, and Glacier Point Road, which leads to a nice view. But don't worry - there is plenty open. The waterfalls are in full flow after all the melting snow and are looking spectacular. Hiking and cycling trails are open, lovely air-conditioned buses are running in the valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is open.

This is going to be an awesome time!

The weather at Bass Lake looks set to be beautiful for memorial day weekend. It's supposed to be up to 90 high, 61 low this weekend and the forecast for Wed May 25th is currently Mostly Sunny, 78 high, 55 low. Of course it's hard to tell how this will change over the next couple weeks but it gives us a good idea at least! We'll keep you updated once a more solid forecast is out.

Looking forward to enjoying some lovely sun with all of you! Looks like we really will be getting golden... (sorry)

Got a car?

If you live in (or near) the Bay Area (or if you don't but you're crazy enough to drive all the way here) and you are willing to volunteer to drive a few people up to Sierra National Forest / Yosemite, we would really appreciate it. We'll give you some money back towards the cost of gas, and of course it means you'll get to choose the music in the car. Which is far better than braving our Power Ballads or Sixties Soul CDs!

Well, things are starting to get exciting. There are absolutely loads of you coming to this event and you're asking lots of questions (which I'm sorry we haven't answered for a few days as we were away over the weekend). Same if you have any ideas for the event, or just want to compliment us on organizing such a great event! Still a few places left if you want to come...

Directions and Maps

Well, registrations are pouring in from all you lovely people. Keep them coming! A couple new additions to the site:

  • I've added maps of where we will be camping, zoomed in at 3 (yes - 3! not 2, not 4, but 3) different levels and a link to Google Maps showing the fantastic journey we will be undertaking on Friday from the Bay Area to Sierra National Forest.
  • I've added the rest of the guys to the little "Meet..." section at the side. There are now 16 of us, complete with silly pictures and cryptic blurbs.

Register by May 1st!!
